The Wye Valley Walk

Walking holidays in the Wye Valley

Walking holidays or hiking tours of the Wye Valley will take you through 136 miles of the stunning and varied landscapes of the famous Wye Valley Walk.

The Wye Valley has densely wooded gorges, open river meadows, lush green hills, mountains, orchards, open moorland and some of the best areas of ancient British broad leaved woodland in the UK.

The Wye Valley Walk starts at Chepstow Castle where you will find the oldest surviving stone fortification in Britain built in 1067. The Wye Valley then meanders gently through 5 British counties in both England and Wales to the end of the walk at Rhyd-y-Benwch in the Hafren Forest.  The source of the river Wye comes from deep within the hills of Plynlimon, a heather clad mountain which dominates central Wales.

Some walking highlights along the way are the Cistercian Abbey of Tintern which is one of the greatest monastic ruins of Wales.   Yat Rock where you can see Peregrine Falcons nesting.  The 12th century Goodrich Castle, Hereford Cathedral, Hay on Wye’s famous bookshops, Penddol rocks rapids, and let’s not forget the rebel Welsh prince Owain Glyndwr, who is supposedly buried at Monnington-on-Wye.

Henry V was born in Monmouth, William Wordsworth wrote poetry about Tintern whilst staying in Llandogo, Edward Elgar lived in Hereford and Admiral Horatio Nelson had very strong links with Monmouth.   All these places are along your walk.

Walking holidays along the Wye Valley can be taken as a whole, or split into 2 sections.   With varied itineraries from 5 to 15 days there is sure to be a walking holiday option to suit you.
