The Three Castles Walk is a circular route around Skenfrith Castle, White Castle and Grosmont Castle of about 19 miles (30km).

Set in the beautiful Monmouthshire countryside, the three Norman castles formed a line of defence on the border of The Marches, and serve as a reminder of the turbulent history of this Welsh/English border area.

There is evidence that a castle existed in Skenfrith by 1160.  White Castle is the best preserved of the three castles and was founded around 1075.  Grosmont Castle dates from around 1110.

All three castles were re-fortified in the 13th Century when a Welsh uprising threatened.  During the 15th century Owain Glyndwr’s men attacked Grosmont Castle, but were beaten back by the English Army.

The Three Castles Walk takes you through a rural area of mixed farmland and undulating landscapes of wooded hillsides and valleys. The diverse habitat makes the countryside area rich in wildlife, simply excellent for photography and fascinating historical interest.
